The world’s first hydrogen-powered plasma torch, capable of breaking down unsorted plastic waste at high temperatures. Researchers from the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials have developed the world’s first hydrogen-powered plasma torch, which can decompose unsorted plastic waste at 2,000°C within 0.01 seconds. This technology can selectively convert mixed plastics into ethylene and benzene at a rate of 70-90%, producing raw materials with a purity of over 99% that can be used to manufacture new types of plastics. Unlike traditional pyrolysis methods at 450–600°C, this plasma process, using 100% hydrogen fuel, can effectively prevent the formation of soot. This system does not require expensive plastic sorting and can effectively process wax-based recycling residues, with a selectivity of up to 80%. This technology will begin commercial pilot operations in 2026, with costs comparable to those of fossil fuel-based ethylene production.
