The Jilin CanNier methanol-to-aviation-fuel project has chosen Honeywell’s eFining™ process technology

On April 28, Honeywell announced that it has entered into a partnership with Jilin Caner New Energy Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Jilin Caner”). The two parties will jointly advance a project aimed at producing 280,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) per year. The project will utilize Honeywell UOP eFiningTM process technology, and upon completion is expected to become one of the largest single-unit production facilities for methanol-to-jet fuel (MTJ) in the world, providing significant support for the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce emissions and achieve decarbonization. Honeywell UOP eFiningTM process technology is a methanol-to-aerosol fuel solution that uses green methanol as raw material. The methanol used in this process technology can be either green methanol produced from biomass gasification, or electronic methanol synthesized from green hydrogen and carbon dioxide. This technology enables the reliable, efficient, and cost-effective production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), including electronic sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF). Compared to conventional aviation fuels, SAF produced using the eFining™ process can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It can also be directly blended with traditional jet fuel without any modifications to existing aviation infrastructure, thereby providing a scalable technological solution for the aviation industry to achieve its lower-emission goals. This project will build upon Jilin Cornell’s existing methanol-to-olefins (MTO) facility to expand its operations downstream, facilitating the higher-value utilization of methanol resources. It also provides the foundation for future utilization of renewable energy sources such as biomass, wind power, and solar energy in the Northeast region. Upon completion, the project will not only help meet the growing global demand for sustainable aviation fuel in the aviation industry, but also drive the development and upgrading of the regional low-carbon chemical industry chain. This partnership is an extension of the long-term strategic relationship between Honeywell and Jilin Cornell Group. As early as 2016, Cornell Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. adopted Honeywell UOP’s methanol-to-olefins process technology to facilitate the conversion of coal resources into high-value chemical products. This methanol-to-aerosol fuel project further expands the cooperation between the two parties in the field of low-carbon energy. As China continues to promote the development of low-carbon fuels as part of its overall energy strategy, the large-scale application of methanol-based aviation fuel technology is expected to accelerate the commercialization of sustainable aviation fuels by diversifying raw materials and reducing costs through technological advancements.
