IMDEA Materials develops a multifunctional Kevlar-based composite 2026-05-25 13:56:31 According to foreign media reports, researchers at the IMDEA Materials Institute in Madrid, Spain, have developed a multifunctional Kevlar-based composite that combines structural properties with integrated strain sensing, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and de-icing functions. Published in the journal Composites Part B: Engineering, this study demonstrates how scalable manufacturing processes can be used to directly generate laser-induced graphene (LIG) on Kevlar fiber fabrics and integrate it into advanced composite laminates. Traditional fiber-reinforced polymer composites possess a high strength-to-weight ratio, which is why they are widely used in industries such as aerospace, transportation, and energy. However, these materials usually only provide structural functions. To integrate additional functions such as real-time monitoring, electromagnetic protection, or thermal management, external devices or extra components are usually required, which increases complexity and weight.
