Could some expert please explain when to choose API 598 versus API 6D?
API 598 is the standard for inspection, testing, and pressure testing； API 6D is applicable to valve design and manufacturing. Requirements have been set for assembly, testing, and documentation.
API598 and API6D are two separate standards that are used independently. Difference: Both require pressure testing of the valves, but the specific holding time varies, as does their range of application. API 598 deals with the inspection and testing of valves, and serves as a general standard for valve testing. API6D is a standard for pipelines and pipeline valves; pressure testing is just one aspect of it, as there are other requirements as well, such as the design of pipeline valves, materials, welding, and so on. If testing in accordance with API6D is used, then testing per API598 is not necessary, and vice versa (unless otherwise specified)
Since the tests differ, what needs to be considered when choosing which standard to use for testing? When should 598 be used? When should 6D be used?
It depends on the design; valves designed in accordance with API6D standards should definitely be tested using that standard, while others are tested using API598.
