The gas composition inside the package is difficult to control or modify using other technical methods from the end of filling until the package is opened to use the product. Portable headspace analyzers, which utilize barrier packaging materials, can only hinder the penetration of gases into or out of the packaging material; they cannot eliminate the gases already present inside the package, such as oxygen (unless oxygen-removal techniques are used in the packaging). If the level of residual gases exceeds the high concentration limits required for product storage, then no matter how good the high-barrier materials or how thorough the sealing methods are, it will be impossible to meet the product’s shelf life requirements. Therefore, we need to detect the gas composition remaining in the packaging and adjust the packaging process accordingly.
