Process Engineering Division – Instrumentation and Automation Section – Daily Topics – Topic No. 2021-01-16: Discussion question: 359. Is heat tracing provided for water-based media in your facility? Which is more effective, steam tracing or electric tracing?
Heating is rarely used in the south; if it is needed, steam is used. There are also laboratories that use electric heating elements (electric heat tapes)
Electric heat tracing is used, which carries a risk of failure; this has happened before. Steam tracing is better in winter
Located in a chemical industry complex in the northwest, all water-based media are equipped with insulation and heating systems; steam is used for heating. As long as the construction quality is good and there are no issues with the drain valves, the heating effect is very satisfactory. Electric heating is generally used in analytical instruments, as well as in integrated electric heating cables, due to the strict requirements for controlling the temperature of the medium.
There is steam and electricity; electric heating provides a convenient way for heating.
In the southwest quadrant, the water medium has no insulation nor heating; electric heating is mostly used

Special media require heat tracing; steam heat tracing should be used whenever possible
