Evaluation of 72-Hour Continuous Operation for Rongxin Chemical’s “Ultra-Large-Scale Water-Coal Slurry Gasification Unit Capable of Processing 4,000 Tons of Coal per Day per Furnace” – Author/Source: Coal-Based New Materials; Date: 2021-01-27; Clicks: 17. From January 23 to 25, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation organized experts to conduct a 72-hour continuous operation evaluation of the project under Rongxin Chemical Co., Ltd.’s key research and development program, namely the “Ultra-Large-Scale Water-Coal Slurry Gasification Unit Capable of Processing 4,000 Tons of Coal per Day per Furnace”. “During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, organizations such as Shandong Energy Group, Rongxin Chemical, East China University of Science and Technology, and Yankuang Slurry Coal Gasification and Coal Chemicals **Engineering Research Center Co., Ltd. jointly undertook this project. A gasification unit capable of processing 4,000 tons of coal per day is currently the largest coal slurry gasification unit in the world in terms of the amount of coal it can handle per furnace. During the assessment period, the expert group listened to Rongxin Chemical’s presentation on the construction, operation of the super-large-scale water-coal slurry gasification industrial demonstration facility capable of processing 4,000 tons of coal per day per furnace, as well as the preparations made for the assessment. They inspected the facility on-site, reviewed the original records of its startup and shutdown processes as well as various operational logs, and analyzed the data from 72 hours of actual operation and the assessment results. Following the evaluation, the expert group unanimously agreed that the demonstration unit operated smoothly during the 72-hour testing period, provided accurate measurement and analysis results, and its various technical parameters exceeded the specified requirements. It featured a high degree of automation, flexible operation control, and safe and reliable performance. Numerous innovations and improvements were achieved in terms of key core equipment, system integration, and process configuration. The successful operation of this demonstration unit fully demonstrates the outstanding advantages of the multi-nozzle opposed water-coal slurry gasification technology in terms of scale expansion and long-term safe and stable operation. It further strengthens Shandong Energy Group’s leading position in the field of coal gasification technology, providing technical support for the construction of large-scale coal-based energy and chemical industrial bases in China. The assessment was passed successfully. This ultra-large-scale coal-water slurry gasification technology was applied to Rongxin Chemical Co., Ltd. in Inner Mongolia’s 400,000-ton-per-year ethylene glycol and 300,000-ton-per-year DMMn production project. Three multi-nozzle opposed coal-water slurry gasification units were constructed, each capable of processing 4,000 tons of coal per day; the inner diameter of the gasification furnaces was 4,000 mm, and the gasification pressure was 6.5 MPa. These units operated in a 2-in-service/1-backup configuration. The first gasification furnace was successfully put into operation on October 29, 2019, with successful feed processing from the very first attempt. As of December 31, 2020, Furnace E had accumulated 6,550 hours of operation, Furnace F had 5,236 hours of operation, and Furnace G had 6,250 hours of operation. To date, there have been no unplanned shutdowns, enabling safe, stable, long-term, full-load, and high-quality operation. Meng Xiangjun, the chief technical expert at the Energy Group, extended his congratulations on the assessment. He noted that this assessment represents another milestone for the energy group in the field of large-scale water-coal slurry gasification technology. The energy group will continue to work together with East China University of Science and Technology to develop new furnace types using new coal varieties from the Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia regions, and to pursue further research on the enlargement of water-coal slurry gasification units. Ji Wenpu, Deputy General Manager of Nenghua Company, Secretary of the Party General Branch of Rongxin Chemicals, and Executive Director, expressed his gratitude to all the experts for their hard work over the past three days. He said that Rongxin Chemical will take this assessment as an opportunity to fully incorporate the suggestions put forward by the experts, ensure the \"stable, efficient, and optimal\" operation of the 4,000-ton capacity gasification unit, maximize its overall production capacity, strengthen Shandong Energy Group’s leading position in the field of international water-coal slurry gasification technology, and lay a solid foundation for the subsequent evaluation of technical achievements. Technical research is carried out in areas such as long-cycle operation, cost reduction and efficiency improvement, as well as energy conservation and productivity enhancement. This aims to increase the concentration of coal slurry, reduce the consumption of raw coal and oxygen, and improve the economic efficiency of the plant, thereby providing a comprehensive set of data to support the commercialization of this demonstration furnace model in the market.
