The pure oxygen converter is the core equipment in the conversion process, and its main task is to convert methane in the feed gas into hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide – the gases necessary for synthesizing methanol. It features good safety in operation, a long service life, and stable conversion rates; it also has advantages such as no carbon black precipitation and the ability to discharge harmful substances at high altitudes. To ensure a flawless first operation, the company communicated in advance with the general contractor and the design team to develop a detailed operation plan. Special training sessions were held to address various details that might affect the operation, so that every employee could master the procedures thoroughly. At 22:00 that day, the relevant process parameters and various operational metrics of the pure oxygen converter reached the conditions necessary for oxygen cut-off. After conducting a final inspection on site, the process engineers allowed oxygen to mix with superheated steam and enter the pure oxygen converter, where it reacted violently with the coke oven gas introduced into the furnace. The temperature inside the furnace rose rapidly, indicating a successful first ignition of the pure oxygen converter – one day earlier than planned.
