Last month, an old friend told me that there was an incident involving methanol being used in the engine; it almost led to a serious accident. Fortunately, my junior colleague insisted on carrying out inspections by checking through the viewing ports to see how combustion was progressing inside the furnace. He discovered that one of the conversion tubes had been burned through, with flames spreading across the middle of the furnace; those flames also reached seven or eight adjacent conversion tubes. He rushed back to report this, and we quickly organized the process to stop the operation and seal off the damaged tube. Now, the system has been restarted. Think about what the team leader and the controller are doing There were complete abnormalities in terms of system pressure, furnace negative pressure, furnace temperature, as well as the tonnage consumption of natural gas and steam; yet the main control system showed no reaction at all. If it hadn’t been for an experienced worker who insisted on carrying out inspections, and given that the burn-through occurred not long after, it’s possible that the furnace could have exploded during that night. Even if the gas does not accumulate in the radiation section, it will still gather in the recesses of the auxiliary boilers located after the convection section. In the event of an explosion, even if no one is injured, problems such as damage to various coils in the convection section, the upward and downward tubes of the high-pressure gas tanks in the auxiliary boilers, as well as issues with the furnace insulation, can all lead to significant losses. Under such operating conditions, a sudden sharp drop in process pressure is bound to occur; abnormal values appear in various parameters such as the temperature in the overheating section and convection section of the furnace, the negative pressure inside the furnace, the residual oxygen level in the furnace gases, the temperature at the inlet of the exhaust fan, and even the speed of the exhaust fan, as well as vibrations. Yet no one seems to notice these abnormalities at all. In the end, a reward of 500 was given to the shift leader and the control operator for handling the incident. My poor junior colleague has been working shifts his whole life without even getting the chance to become a control operator. He often gets angry and curses due to the unfairness around him, but he still maintains professionalism and ethical standards – which is truly admirable and valuable. Thankfully, he was there that night.
Ah, they’re in their forties now; they’ve worked at that company for almost thirty years. Where can they go? All their former colleagues have left except me. Honestly, isn’t it the same everywhere?
