Spherical shapes tend to perform poorly in practical applications, and this is determined by the manufacturing process.
There are many reasons. Firstly, spherical alumina catalysts are mostly used under low-pressure conditions, and spherical alumina undergoes significant phase changes under high-pressure conditions. Secondly, spherical catalysts under high-pressure conditions are basically magnesium-aluminum carriers, and their molding process is relatively difficult. Thirdly, spherical catalysts are more suitable for use in axial radial reactors; there is no need to use spherical catalysts in ordinary reactors either. As far as we know, the spherical catalyst for high-pressure conversion is available only from Keliba; that’s the one we use, and we haven’t seen it offered by any other manufacturers.
