It was reported on January 25 that “the successful operation of the world’s first industrial demonstration project for coal-based ethanol” was ranked third among the outstanding achievements in scientific and technological innovation by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017. In 2017, the world’s first industrial-scale coal-based ethanol production facility, developed jointly by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Yanchang Petroleum, namely Yanchang Petroleum’s 100,000 tons per year syngas-to-ethanol plant, successfully completed the entire production process and produced qualified anhydrous ethanol. It is understood that a research team from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, began working on the research and development of \"key catalysts for coal-based ethanol technology\" in 2010, and achieved a breakthrough in the activity and lifespan of key dimethyl ether carbonylation catalysts in 2013. In 2014, the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Yanchang Petroleum launched the \"100,000 tons per year industrial demonstration project for producing ethanol from syngas\". Trial operations of the project began at the end of 2016, and on January 11, 2017, qualified products were produced; the purity of these products reached 99.71%, with all key performance indicators meeting or exceeding the design values.
