Recently, due to the persistently high level of liquid in the separator at the top of the methanol wash regeneration tower, resulting in difficulties in draining it, it was determined that valve blockage was the cause. The valve was therefore disassembled, and a small amount of mercury was found in the valve chamber blocking the passage. Let’s discuss the causes of mercury formation and the solutions to address it.

Mercury is brought in through vaporization; just like ammonia, once it gets into the low-pressure section, there’s no good way to deal with it – it can only be removed in the upstream system
