On December 13, 2025, the 500,000 tons per year project for producing biodiesel and biojet fuel from industrial-grade oils, undertaken by Shanghai Hetu Engineering Co., Ltd. for Blue Whale Bioenergy (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd., was successfully commissioned, with qualified products being produced. This project is a **National Development and Reform Commission demonstration project for green and low-carbon advanced technologies, as well as a major project in Zhejiang Province. It is capable of processing 500,000 tons of waste oils each year, producing over 420,000 tons of biofuels, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.2 million tons, thereby reaching international advanced levels. The successful operation of this project marks the successful implementation of the largest device in China that relies on independent intellectual property rights, and it represents a milestone. It will bring about new advances in the sustainable development of China’s biodiesel and biojet fuel industries. Using waste oils such as gutter oil as raw materials, this project employs a hydrogenation-deoxygenation and hydrogenation-isomerization process to produce ultra-low freezing point biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel, depending on the process operating conditions and market demands. In recent years, HeTu has been exploring the development and application of engineering technologies in the biomass sector, and has successfully built the world’s first industrial demonstration plant for producing anhydrous ethanol through the biological fermentation of syngas at a capacity of 50,000 tons per year. The successful commissioning of this 500,000 tons per year project for producing biodiesel and biojet fuel from industrial-grade oils represents another breakthrough for Hetu in the field of biomass.
