Successful First Batch of Green Methanol Delivered by Shanghai Electric 2026-03-09 14:57:45 From March 5th to 6th, the green methanol produced by Shanghai Electric’s Taonan project was loaded onto the container ship MV Maersk Osmin at the Shengdong Terminal in Shanghai’s Yangshan Port. This refueling operation was coordinated by the Shanghai Port Group, and with the support of agencies such as the Yangshan Port Maritime Authority and port authorities, it enabled an efficient sequence of ship loading/unloading and fuel replenishment. As a new generation of methanol dual-fuel container ship, the CMA CGM Osymium uses Shanghai Electric’s green methanol as its primary clean fuel. This reflects the international shipping giants’ high recognition of the quality, supply capacity, and end-to-end service capabilities of domestically produced green methanol, as well as it underscores the maturity and reliability of Shanghai Electric’s integrated supply model that encompasses green methanol production, land-sea transportation, and port refueling. As China’s first project to produce green methanol through the combination of green electricity for hydrogen production and biomass gasification, it takes advantage of the wind and solar resources as well as the biomass availability in western Jilin. It employs proprietary technologies such as oxygen-enriched pressurized biomass gasification, flexible hydrogen production using wind energy, and the synthesis of methanol from carbon dioxide-rich syngas, thereby creating an integrated system that covers the entire process from green electricity to green hydrogen to green methanol. Through systematic debugging and optimization, the project has achieved continuous and stable operation, successfully producing large quantities of green methanol that meets international marine standards. Its carbon emission reduction over the entire life cycle is significantly better than that of traditional coal-based methanol, offering outstanding advantages in terms of technological advancement, environmental sustainability, and industrial feasibility. In the first phase of the project, 50,000 tons of green methanol will be produced annually; once full production capacity is achieved, it will enable large-scale manufacturing, helping Shanghai to establish a hub for the supply of green methanol and contributing to the implementation of the \"dual carbon\" strategy as well as the sustainable development of the shipping industry.
