On May 7, 2017, at around 1 a.m., an electrical short circuit caused a fire on the ground floor of a two-story fruit store. It was a family of four: the father suffered severe burns, the mother sustained minor injuries, the son was unharmed on the second floor, while the 13-year-old daughter died on the first floor at the scene. What happened: The fruit shop where the accident occurred was a two-story ordinary rural building located next to a national highway; there were no fire-fighting facilities in the building, and the water pipes were located in the courtyard. Due to good business performance, there are many cardboard boxes, plastic bags, and plastic baskets used for storing fruits in the store. That night, the parents and younger son slept on the second floor, while the daughter slept on the first floor. When the circuit short caused a fire, the daughter had already noticed it, but she was too scared; she simply cried for help loudly. Instead of leaving the scene immediately, she chose to hide and call for help. Due to being busy during the day and feeling tired, the parents did not wake up in time at first; they only realized it when the fire became intense. The father hurried downstairs to rescue his daughter first; by that time, she was already in a coma with a very weak pulse. The father made great efforts and finally found his daughter in the fire, carrying her outside, which resulted in severe burns to his own body. After taking her son outside, the mother hurried to move the money box away from the fire. The money box was at the door, so mother only suffered minor injuries. The neighbors quickly got up to help put out the fire, called 120 for emergency medical assistance, and alerted the police at 119. By the time the emergency services arrived, it was already confirmed that the daughter had no signs of life. According to the neighbors, the daughter’s burns were not severe; smoke inhalation was likely the main cause of death. The father was taken to the hospital for treatment. What was once a harmonious family was destroyed in just one night. The weather is getting hotter and hotter; I hope everyone will remember this painful lesson and take proper precautions to ensure electrical safety during the summer. Especially children and the elderly, who lack awareness and knowledge about safety, we should explain these things to them regularly. We must not be so busy making money that we neglect our families, as it will be too late to regret it once an accident occurs. What’s the use of earning as much money as possible? It is estimated that the direct economic loss resulting from this accident is around 300,000 yuan, not to mention the high costs of treatment for the father in the years that follow; even all the money earned over those years wouldn’t be enough to cover these expenses.
