Ethylene tar is generally burned directly as fuel in refineries, resulting in a low rate of direct utilization. What are everyone’s thoughts on the comprehensive utilization of ethylene tar? I have 2 ideas; please share your thoughts when you hear them! 1. Adopt the synthetic resin route: a. Gumar resin + tin. Most of the remaining light components are hydrogenated to be used as blending agents, or extracted to obtain high-purity toluene, xylene,...; b) after decolorization, they are used to produce high-quality white resins (not familiar with this process). 2. The coking route: a) high-quality needle coke (not familiar with this either); b) some petroleum coke is obtained as a by-product. In ethylene cracking, processes that use naphtha and diesel as feedstocks tend to produce larger amounts of tar. In fact, for modern ethylene cracking units, the amount of tar produced is controllable, and through optimized conditions and operations, the level of tar production is no longer what it was more than a decade ago. Tar indeed has little practical value, and its processing is rather complicated as well as costly. The comprehensive utilization of tar may be somewhat feasible for cracking units that use large amounts of naphtha and diesel as feedstocks; for those that use light hydrocarbons as cracking feedstocks, burning off a small amount of tar directly is a good option.
