We have installed piezoelectric sealing joints on the pressure transducer inlet pipes near the reciprocating compressors in our plant’s hydrogenation unit. The medium used is hydrogen with a pressure of around 120 kilograms per square centimeter. The manufacturer provided PTFE gaskets; according to the design, these gaskets are suitable for use. However, considering the high pressure and significant vibration at the compressor cylinder outlet, we requested that the manufacturer supply metal gaskets instead. Currently, the manufacturer is providing aluminum gaskets. Our construction team says that for other units they have worked on in the past, soft iron gaskets were used, while for the high-pressure pipe fittings and valves we purchase ourselves, copper gaskets are used. I would like to ask which type of gasket is more suitable in this situation. I also hope experts can help explain the differences between various gaskets and their appropriate usage conditions. It is recommended to use soft iron gaskets; there are many restrictions on the use of copper gaskets in the chemical industry, so they should be used with caution.
I would also like to ask: since it is a hydrodesulfurization reaction and there is about 10 PPM of hydrogen sulfide in the medium, will the soft iron gaskets have any impact? Also, can the aluminum gaskets provided by the manufacturer be used?
The soft iron gaskets in the instrument connections are all of small size, usually flat gaskets.
