PSAs come in dual-series configurations; taking 10 towers as an example, a dual-series setup consists of 5 towers on each side. Some PSAs are single-series, with 10 towers. I would like to ask what the advantages and disadvantages are of both single-series and dual-series versions?
For dual-series systems, there are generally 2 sequential tanks, while for single-series systems, there is 1 tank – is that correct?
The two series are divided into adsorption and hydrogen extraction, with different adsorbents on each side; In the single-series type, the adsorbent is placed in an adsorption tower.
We have used it here, mainly for online handling of programmable valve failures. Due to a fault in the programmable valve, 5 towers are taken out of service (operating in single or dual series); the manual valves for the single or dual series are closed, and the faulty valve is repaired while the plant is operating at low load.
Generally speaking, the tower maintenance of PSA units has its limitations; there are certain valves that cannot be serviced solely through tower maintenance. So devices like yours can be stopped halfway for maintenance. The processing technique you mentioned does exist; under normal full-load operation, all 10 adsorption towers work together, allowing for a operation pattern similar to 10-2-4/P or 10-3-3/P. However, in the event of a failure, half of the towers can be shut down, enabling operation in the 5-1-3/P mode, at which point the processing capacity **decreases**. Moreover, this design can further reduce the lower limit of the device’s processing capacity, making it very flexible.
