The operating pressure of the hydrocracking unit is 16.0 MPa. The recycle gas compressor is of reciprocating type, and the design institute has specified inlet and outlet isolation valves. Let’s discuss whether they are necessary

If there is no shut-off valve, how should malfunctions of the equipment itself be handled? If a leak occurs, wouldn’t pressure be released right here? Adding cut-off valves increases the risk of malfunction, but from a safety perspective, it is not practical to rely on operators to close the inlet and outlet manual valves.
The valve at 16 MPa cannot be opened by one or two people in any short amount of time; you’ll understand this once you try it. Also, electric valves for the inlet and outlet are usually installed as part of the startup interlock system, so pay attention to whether there are any design omissions when reviewing the flow diagram
