Problem description: The bottom pump of the hydrogen sulfide stripping tower in the unit stopped operating, which triggered an interlock in the distillation furnace. How should the distillation section be operated, given that it is configured in a single-stage series arrangement? The naphtha section at the back.

The bottom pump of the stripping tower was shut down, and the feed to the distillation column was interrupted; there was nothing left to adjust. The bottom pump was simply stopped, which would result in a higher liquid level at the bottom of the tower, but that’s fine. The output of the product from the top of the tower was halted, and the temperature at the top of the tower as well as the liquid level in the reflux tank were maintained. If the liquid level dropped, the pump would be stopped.
