In fact, acidic water is used to absorb hydrogen sulfide generated during the hydrogenation process; such water needs to maintain a relatively high alkalinity. In actual operation, ammonia (or alcohol amine), or even other strongly alkaline substances (less commonly), are injected to facilitate the absorption of hydrogen sulfide. The pH is generally kept above 9, as when it falls below 8.5, the hydrogen sulfite ions in the water tend to form hydrogen sulfide, which severely affects the absorption and removal of hydrogen sulfide from the recycled hydrogen and oil products. The condensate water from the side-line stripping of the oil fractionation tower may be weakly acidic, as no alkali is added to the steam used for stripping. The acidity can be roughly understood and controlled by monitoring the pH of the acidic water circulating in the online monitoring device.
