Regarding the issue of acid gas flares in sulfur recovery units: 1 When there is only one sulfur recovery unit, is it necessary to install an acid gas flare as a safety measure for that unit? 2 When there are two or more sulfur recovery units, and one of them is in hot standby mode, can an acidic gas flare be omitted as a safety measure for the sulfur recovery units?
The flare system for acidic gases is a measure designed to ensure that such gases can be vented when the sulfur recovery unit is unable to accept them. It is used when introducing acidic gases at the start-up stage, during amine solution regeneration when the plant is shut down, and in emergency situations; it has nothing to do with the number of sulfur recovery units installed.
It is advisable to have a flare line for acidic gases, and the acidic gas lines must be insulated in sections. It is also important to avoid water accumulation at the lowest points, as this can increase the pressure difference within the pipelines
Theoretically, torch lines are not allowed, but as a safety measure, just in case, they must be available
A set of units definitely requires such settings; otherwise, if there are problems with the sulfur unit, it will directly affect the normal operation of other upstream facilities. For those with multiple sulfur units, I believe it is also necessary to have flares in place, as failing to use them in case of abnormalities in certain equipment and facilities can impact the company’s overall production. Of course, in cases where there is a hot standby system, it is still better not to use flares for acidic gases. The flare line represents the last line of defense for a company’s facilities, and it should only be used as a last resort
