If the purge gas contains O2, although in small amounts, this O2 will participate in the reaction. Local hot spots are likely to occur near the purge pipe outlet. One more thing to add: purge protection is a very critical factor for the stable and efficient operation of a plant. In several projects I’ve worked on, especially those involving pure oxygen, unplanned plant shutdowns occurred due to inadequate purge procedures. A rotameter should be installed on the purging pipeline, and it is necessary to regularly inspect this purging flow meter to ensure the flow rate of the purging gas. Once again, the flow rate of the purging gas must not be lower than the values specified by the manufacturer. The formation of NOX during combustion is conditional; generally, in the high-temperature areas of sulfur production furnaces (with temperatures above 900 degrees), oxygen-deficient combustion helps to suppress the formation of NOX. In the incinerator, since the furnace temperature is below 800 degrees, the temperature conditions required for NOX formation are not met, and the effect of N2 in the purge gas on NOX emissions can be disregarded. Nitrogen is better; it provides better protection. If energy consumption is a concern, use unfiltered air or filtered air.
