The environmental damage caused by steam, as well as the health risks it poses, are also reasons why regulatory authorities monitor the levels of petrochemical vapors emitted into the atmosphere. Many vapors from the petrochemical industry, such as compounds like benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, have been classified by environmental protection agencies as hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Therefore, managers of petrochemical storage facilities must closely monitor the steam emissions from their equipment and ensure that they comply with the emission thresholds set by the newly enacted \"Air Pollution Prevention and Control Law\".
The VOC emissions from storage tanks must meet regulatory standards, so an oil and vapor recovery system is required. There are condensation, absorption, adsorption technologies, or combinations of these three technologies.
