Can a packed tower be used in the catalytic cracking fractionator to increase the inlet pressure of the compressor?
Float valve column trays have the advantages of simple structure, easy installation and removal, high efficiency (compared to bubble cap columns), great flexibility, wide applicability, and high production capacity. However, they are prone to liquid leakage when handling low flow rates. Packed towers have a simple structure, making them easy to manufacture, install, and maintain. However, the gas-liquid contact in them is not as good as that in tray towers, and channeling tends to occur, which is why they are rarely used in large distillation towers. It is mostly used in absorption and extraction equipment.
Float valves for distillation towers are highly practical. .
The lower part of the distillation tower is not suitable, as the superheated feed contains catalyst; it can be used above the middle section.
In the actual operation of the catalytic fractionation tower, there are 5 fixed-vane trays plus 3 sections of packing; almost the entire tower is filled with packing, and it has been operating properly since 2012.
With the advancement of technology, it is still feasible to use fully packed catalytic fractionation towers; it is said that such towers are already in use abroad.
