Pumps that are particularly important in the process flow – those that can cause the plant to shut down due to interlocks or lead to serious safety incidents – are pumps whose load is closely related to the process conditions. For pumps whose load can be adjusted as part of the process, design considerations related to equipment safety and process requirements allow the current signal from the drive motor to be sent to the DCS or to any location where it is needed for display. What I am familiar with are mainly variable-frequency pumps; I have never seen ones that operate at the power frequency. Such as the high-pressure liquid oxygen pump in gasification units!
