In the operations at our facility, it is common to need to activate two pumps to carry out work. 1. Should the main pump be started first and then the standby pump, could this lead to pressure buildup in the pump that is started later? 2. If both pumps are activated simultaneously with the outlet valves opened alternately, could this result in an excessive current surge that damages the motor?
Normally, they are started one by one. As for the issue of pressure buildup in the pumps you mentioned, it doesn’t occur as long as the outlet valve is open; at most, there might be a difference in the amount of fluid pumped out by each pump. After all, the system is designed to operate with just one pump, and once normal operating conditions are reached, the other pump can be shut down. This is only an emergency measure; long-term operation using this approach is not appropriate. However, if long-term operation is necessary for some reason, adjust the outlet pressure of the pumps accordingly to keep the output from both pumps roughly the same. In the second case, are you trying to avoid the first case? There’s no need for that; if there is a problem, the only issue is that the opening degrees of the two pump outlet valves are different, so there’s no reason to start them both at the same time. As for the excessive current you mentioned, I think it’s impossible; how could there be an excessive current when the outlet valves aren’t fully open? Doesn’t double-pump operation occur whenever the pump is reversed?
