Our factory has been facing frequent problems with the reciprocating pumps recently, so we want to change the pump inlet pipeline to one connected to a centrifugal pump whose parameters meet the required performance standards. If the head and inlet/outlet pressures meet the requirements, can it be modified in this way?
It depends on whether your medium is suitable for using a centrifugal pump; or if your current flow rate is too low and the head is too high, then a centrifugal pump may not be an appropriate choice.
Theoretically, this is true: the head of a single-stage centrifugal pump is not very high, usually around 200 meters. Moreover, the pressure at the pump’s inlet cannot be too low, otherwise cavitation will occur in the centrifugal pump.
Centrifugal pumps have requirements regarding net positive suction head; calculate the net positive suction head for the installation. Also, whether your medium can withstand shear forces determines whether you can use a vane pump.
It is possible to modify the original design, but the process parameters of the original pump must be provided. Centrifugal pumps and reciprocating pumps each have distinct properties that prevent them from being interchangeable; not all pumps can be used in place of one another.
