Shanghai Gaoqiao Petrochemical Refinery "10-22" Liquefied Gas Deflagration Accident On October 22, 1988, a liquefied gas deflagration accident occurred in the Xiaoliangshan spherical tank area of the Shanghai Gaoqiao Petrochemical Refinery, resulting in 26 deaths and 15 burns. At the time of the incident, workers in the spherical tank area of the oil product workshop of the plant were opening the valve to dehydrate a liquefied balloon tank. The operator did not follow the procedures and dehydrated while feeding the material, causing water and liquefied gas to be discharged together and escape through the sewage pool in large quantities. The escaping liquefied gas spread with the wind and met the open flame in the heating furnace in the temporary work shed outside the wall of the spherical tank area, causing a deflagration.
The 2015.7.16 Shandong Shida Science and Technology explosion was exactly the same as this accident! They were all caused by dehydration operations leading to massive leaks and explosions when exposed to open flames.
