“Ode to the Mosquitoes,” by Liu Yuxi of the Tang Dynasty: On a deep summer night, the orchid-covered hall is open; mosquitoes fly about in the darkness, their noises sounding like thunder. The noisy roar was startling at first, sounding as though it came from the southern mountains. The clamor inspires joy in the darkness; the ignorant cannot distinguish, and the wise are confused. Dewdrops fall as the moon rises high; its sharp beak is hidden, unseen by eyes. I stand seven feet tall like a sharp thorn; alone, I can overcome all foes and inflict harm upon them. Nature’s impulses are sometimes uncontrollable; I’ve set up a shelter by your bed to assist you secretly. When the clear melodies arrive at dawn in autumn, it’s shameful for such a tiny being to feed the red birds.
This poem was written when Liu Yuxi was exiled to Langzhou. Faced with the slander and mockery from the court officials, he used this satirical poem to express his resentment. Translated into plain language, this poem is quite interesting: On a deep summer night, I open the doors and windows, and the flying insects make a thunderous noise in the darkness. The loud buzzing of these insects is surprising, as if it’s coming from Nanshan. They like to flap their wings in the darkness; not only do foolish people fail to distinguish them, but even wise people can easily get confused.
