After careful review, the expert group fully affirmed the basic design work and believed that the basic design process of the 50,000 tons/year MMA project is reliable, the equipment selection is basically reasonable, the public works and supporting facilities are complete, the general layout of the boundary area is reasonable, and the safety, sanitation, environmental protection and fire protection measures are basically appropriate, which can be used as the basis for detailed design.

This project uses methanol ammonia oxidation method, amidation, and esterification processes to produce MMA. The total project investment is 1,655.42 million yuan, of which 154.8 million yuan is fixed asset investment. After the completion of the project, the average annual total profit is 240 million yuan.
Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is mainly used to produce organic glass (PMMA). It is also one of the main functional monomers in the manufacture of resins, coatings, adhesives and lubricants. It can also be used in surface coatings, polyvinyl chloride modified impact-resistant ACR and MBS, acrylic second monomers, pharmaceutical functional materials, etc. At present, the annual demand in the domestic market is about 1 million tons, and continues to grow rapidly. However, the domestic output is only more than 500,000 tons, leaving a huge gap. China's MMA downstream terminal industry is developing rapidly. Taking the PMMA downstream growth rate as an example, the average annual growth rate is about 20%. In addition to traditional automobile taillights and electronic product materials, application fields such as fiber optic cables and daily cosmetics are also increasingly important and cannot be underestimated. In addition, due to the continued improvement in the consumption of environmentally friendly paints, some existing domestic paint factories have considerable expansion plans in 2018. Judging from the new production capacity plan of a large paint factory in North China, the monthly new consumption of methyl methacrylate is nearly 10,000 tons. At present, MMA production technologies mainly include the acetocyanohydrin method (ACH method), the carbon four route, and the ethylene method. Among them, the procyanohydrin method is currently the most common MMA production method, accounting for more than 60% of the world's total production capacity. The C4 route uses isobutylene or tert-butanol as raw material. The main source of isobutylene includes C4 by-product (1-raffinate), which can be obtained from catalytic cracking or catalytic cracking, heavy raw materials such as naphtha and gasoline. Other sources include MTBE and isobutane. The carbon dioxide route is not common. Currently, there are two commercial devices in the world using technologies developed by BASF and Lucite respectively.

China’s annual output of approximately 150,000 tons of MMA comes from this production route, and most companies use imported PMMA. The environmental storm will only intensify, which means that the past competition methods that relied on sacrificing the environment and resources for profits will gradually be eliminated. This is a historic strategic opportunity for outstanding companies. The death of a large number of polluting companies will free up development space for environmental protection companies, reduce the intensity of competition, and promote industrial upgrading. ——The C4 method will become the main process in the MMA industry in the future. The isobutylene oxidation method for producing MMA can make use of abundant C4 resources. The reaction by-product is mainly water and has little environmental pollution. It is a process route with low cost, little pollution and good economic benefits. Before 2017, China completed and put into operation two sets of isobutylene-based MMA units, including Evonik Degussa's 100,000 tons/year unit and Huiling Chemical's 90,000 tons/year unit. Both projects used foreign technology. With the successful development of domestic independent isobutylene process technology, China has successfully got rid of the embarrassing situation of this process being blocked by foreign companies. At present, the main technology owners of carbon four method MMA include Huayi Group, Wanhua Chemical, Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Asahi Kasei, Mitsubishi Rayon, etc. The carbon four route has gradually become the mainstream of domestic MMA production, and its production capacity has reached 35% of the total.
