Recently, more good news came from the Yushen ethanol project of Yan’an Petroleum – the steam drum of the synthesis unit in the methanol workshop has begun to be fired up. It is said that the purpose of boiling the drum is to remove impurities such as dirt and rust from within the drum, to slow down the formation of scale and corrosion on the inner surfaces of metal components, thereby preventing a decline in steam quality and extending the service life of the equipment. For this drum boiling process, the liquid level is taken as 80%. It is estimated that the total volume of the water system in the synthesis tower is around 85 cubic meters. Assuming a purity of 100% for the chemicals used, the required amounts are: 250 kg of sodium hydroxide and 250 kg of phosphates. To ensure that the drum boiling test is successful, the relevant technical personnel from Yushen Energy Chemical Company of Yunnan Petroleum, together with those from the general contractor, construction team, and supervision unit, worked together to develop a detailed plan for the drum boiling test through careful planning and precise calculations. They also assigned specific individuals to verify that all aspects complied with the technical standards for such tests. At the project site, the operators work day and night to strictly follow the requirements of the technical plan.

Purpose of boiler cleaning: Since the heat exchange surface tubes, headers, and the inner walls of the steam drum in the newly installed boiler are covered with contaminants such as oil and rust, if these are not removed before operation, they will adhere to the tube walls and form hard deposits, thereby reducing the thermal conductivity of the heat exchange surface. This affects the thermal efficiency of the boiler; another part dissolves in the water, affecting the quality of the steam and posing a risk to the safe operation of the turbine. According to the \"Technical Specifications for Construction and Acceptance of Power Generation Facilities\" (Boiler Units Section), drum boilers with a working pressure of less than 9.8 Mpa do not require chemical cleaning, but rather alkaline boiling treatment.
