Have you heard of the Sponge Parking Lot? It’s the kind of parking lot that can absorb water like a sponge. On December 14th, permeable asphalt was successfully laid on the surface of the new 200-meter-long parking lot at Gaoqiao Petrochemical, marking the first successful application of Sinopec’s new environmentally friendly technology using permeable asphalt.

The permeable asphalt used in this project is made from high-quality asphalt produced by Gaoqiao Petrochemical, combined with asphalt modifiers developed through collaboration between oil refining companies, sales organizations, and research institutions. The advantage of this new technology lies in the use of recycled tire rubber powder along with specific materials to create asphalt modifiers through depolymerization processes; this not only increases the viscosity of the modified asphalt, making it suitable for use in permeable pavements, but also enables the green recycling of resources. In addition, this modifier can also reduce the asphalt paving temperature, thereby decreasing smoke emissions. Permeable asphalt pavements represent a new type of high-tech, eco-friendly pavement structure. Compared to traditional asphalt pavements, they feature a skeleton-hole structure in which large-grained gravel is used to create disordered drainage channels; after compaction, the porosity remains around 20%. This structure enables permeable asphalt pavements to have excellent water permeability.
In addition to \"water absorption\", permeable asphalt has many other advantages: 1. Improving driving conditions: Permeable asphalt pavements can effectively eliminate water films on the road surface, prevent water splashing, increase the friction coefficient while driving, shorten braking distances, and enhance driving safety. 2. Alleviating waterlogging pressure: Permeable asphalt pavements can increase the urban drainage area, effectively purify wastewater, and replenish urban groundwater resources. 3. Reducing the heat island effect: The porous structure of permeable asphalt pavements facilitates water infiltration and evaporation, thereby enabling a rapid reduction in pavement temperature. 4. Reducing traffic noise: The porous structure of permeable asphalt pavements can absorb the noise generated by vehicles on the road, thereby reducing noise pollution. 5. High environmental benefits: Rainwater penetrates directly into the underlying soil through permeable asphalt pavements, reducing water loss, conserving water resources, and improving the urban ecological environment. 6. Extend the service life of roads: The material selection and design of permeable asphalt pavements ensure good wear resistance, reducing the likelihood of wear and damage.
