January 23, 2025. Recently, a team led by Professor Tian Yuanyu from China University of Petroleum (East China), in collaboration with Jinan Huangtai Gas Furnace Co., Ltd. and Hebei Zhaofeng Steel Co., Ltd., successfully deployed a fourth-generation gasification furnace – a composite lift-column zone gasification furnace with pure oxygen gasification technology – in Hebei Chengde’s Zhaofeng Steel’s 2*5 million-ton high-quality pellet production project. During operation, the calorific value of the gas exceeds 2500 Kcal/Nm³, meeting the requirements for high calorific value gas in the project’s process. This marks the first time in the metallurgical industry that pure oxygen is used to produce gas with a high calorific value, thereby providing clean fuel with high energy content. Based on the original concept of \"zoned gasification and coupled reactions\" proposed by the established molecular-level coal chemistry theory, this technology combines second-generation fluidized-bed gasification with third-generation fluidized-bed gasification techniques, taking advantage of their complementary strengths. It results in a new generation of transformative zoned gasification technology that eliminates the problems associated with fluidized-bed gasification, such as excessive emissions at the top and bottom of the reactor. It features dry slag discharge, no saline wastewater or black water, and achieves a high calorific value of the generated gas similar to that of moving-bed gasification. Additionally, it offers the advantages of easy coal preparation associated with fluidized-bed gasification, low energy consumption and investment, as well as a high carbon conversion rate similar to that of fluidized-bed gasification. In simple terms, it involves gasifying coal that is easy to vaporize first in a lift-type circulating fluidized bed, while gasifying the fly ash that is difficult to vaporize in a gas fluidized bed. By integrating these two types of fluidized beds together and arranging the flow fields and temperature fields in a scientific manner, as well as making use of energy at various levels, rapid pyrolysis and efficient conversion can be achieved. This technology has a wide range of coal adaptability, enabling the clean and efficient gasification of lignite and bituminous coal, and is particularly capable of meeting the requirements of high-alkali gasification. The product features a stable calorific value, no tar in the gas, no wastewater generation, high efficiency in producing cold gas, low carbon content in the ash, and a high continuous operation rate.

Once this project is put into operation, the carbon conversion rate in the Zhaofeng Steel Pelletizing Project in Chengde, Hebei, will be 98% or higher; the efficiency of cold gas production will be 85% or higher. The calorific value of the gas (when gasified with air) will be 1400 kilocalories per standard cubic meter, while its calorific value (when gasified with pure oxygen) will be 2500 kilocalories per standard cubic meter. The residual carbon content in the slag will be 2% or less. All these indicators are at relatively high levels compared to those in the industry. Based on the original concept of \"zoned gasification and coupled reactions\" proposed by the established molecular-level coal chemistry theory, this technology combines second-generation fluidized-bed gasification with third-generation fluidized-bed gasification techniques, taking advantage of their complementary strengths. Additionally, it offers the advantages of easy coal preparation associated with fluidized-bed gasification, low energy consumption and investment, as well as a high carbon conversion rate similar to that of fluidized-bed gasification. “In simple terms, it involves gasifying coal that is easy to vaporize first in a lift tube circulating fluidized bed, while gasifying the fly ash that is difficult to vaporize in a gas flow bed. By integrating these two types of beds together and arranging the flow and temperature fields in a scientific manner, as well as making use of energy at different levels, rapid pyrolysis and efficient conversion can be achieved. ”The technician said. This technology has a wide range of coal adaptability, enabling the clean and efficient gasification of lignite and bituminous coal, and is particularly capable of meeting the requirements of high-alkali gasification ; The product has a stable calorific value; the gas contains no tar, there is no wastewater generation, the efficiency of cold gas utilization is high, the carbon content in the ash is low, and the continuous operation rate is high. On September 5, 2021, the Chinese Chemical Society organized experts to conduct an evaluation of the scientific and technological achievements related to the research and development as well as pilot testing of technologies for producing gas from the pyrolysis and gasification of medium- and low-rank coal. Experts such as Jin Yong and Sun Lili, who are members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, gave high praise to this technology, stating that it had achieved significant breakthroughs in terms of fundamental theories, processing methods, and associated equipment technologies; it exhibited strong originality and possessed the conditions and foundation necessary for industrial demonstration. On July 6, 2023, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation organized experts in Beijing to evaluate the results of this research; they concluded that the technology features a high carbon conversion rate as well as water and energy savings, and is generally at the international leading level. It is reported that the coal powder composite lift tube zoned gasification furnace can be widely applied in industries such as steel (steel rolling, coking, special steel), non-ferrous metals (aluminum, magnesium, titanium), light industry (ceramics, glass, lime), and chemicals (synthetic ammonia, chemical products). The pulverized coal composite lift tube zoned gasification furnace represents a new option in China’s coal gasification technology; it enables the efficient and clean gasification of coal as well as its comprehensive utilization, helps to alleviate the energy and environmental problems arising from the inefficient and unclean use of coal, reduces dependence on natural gas, drives industrial upgrading, and contributes to ensuring energy security.
