How to understand the turbine exhaust-type labyrinth seal? Doesn’t the process of evacuating air also pull in the atmosphere as well?
What type of turbine? Which device? There is a type of steam turbine of the exhaust-type condensing type. During normal operation, a small amount of steam is introduced into the labyrinth seals at both the driving and non-driving ends of the turbine. This steam enters the labyrinth seals; some of it goes into the cylinder while some escapes into the atmosphere, thereby creating a seal around the vacuum side of the turbine, ensuring the desired vacuum level and preventing external air from entering.
An external jet pump is used to draw away the leaking steam, thereby maintaining an appropriate vacuum level; as a result, the turbine hardly leaks steam from its shaft seals.
As you said, it does draw away some of the air. .
