Recently, when the company went to the manufacturer of empty chlorine gas cylinders to have them filled, the manufacturer reported that those cylinders could not be used due to a bulging issue. What is the cause of this bulging? How to prevent it?

This is a pretty serious issue; the bottle bulges because it can no longer withstand pressure.
The bulge they are referring to might not mean what it seems literally; it’s probably not a very large bulge – it could be an increase in the circumference of the cylinder. It might be due to poor quality of the cylinder, or it could be the result of long-term use. It seems that our gas cylinders need to be replaced after being in use for a certain period of time~ There are tons of gas cylinders in the old equipment area; this is indeed a significant investment!
A bulging cylinder shell weight is definitely not acceptable, as bulging occurs when the cylinder is corroded. The root cause of the bulge is internal and external corrosion; internal corrosion is mainly due to the unsuitable water content in liquid chlorine, which corrodes the bottle body.
As I said, the circumference should increase; then can such gas cylinders no longer be used? How can this be prevented?
Generally, the process involves opening the valve of the liquid chlorine cylinder; the liquid chlorine inside the cylinder passes through a vaporizer (with the liquid chlorine flowing through coiled tubes while water flows through the cylinder body), and is heated with hot water to a temperature of ≥75°C. The chlorine gas then enters the reaction vessel after passing through a buffer tank
Such liquid chlorine cylinders with distorted shapes cannot be used any longer; even if your company wants to use them, the filling facility will not dare to fill them again. The reasons for deformation usually lie within the container itself, as automatic shut-off valves are used when filling liquid chlorine cylinders; once the weight reaches a certain threshold, the valve at that point closes automatically, preventing further filling. Therefore, overfilling is not likely to occur. So, have there been any instances of improper behavior such as collisions or banging in your workplace? Additionally, after use, the gas cylinder must retain some residual pressure; in some facilities, steel cylinders are heated with hot water, which results in negative pressure inside the cylinder after use and causes corrosion of the cylinder body.
