Check valve selection

Regarding the selection of check valves for the tank unloading pump and the transfer pump, both have a pipe diameter of DN80, and the pump outlet heights are 463 and 400 respectively; is it more appropriate to choose a vertical or horizontal installation? Please also explain the reason, thank you! Personally, I think the check valve should be as close as possible to the pump outlet; so would it be more appropriate to choose a vertical installation?
First, one needs to consider what type of check valve to use? There’s no need to get that close.
