The production of hydrogen sulfide occurs mainly during the anaerobic stage (including partial anaerobia), where sulfides are reduced anaerobically to elemental sulfur and hydrogen sulfide; generally, water quality turns black due to the presence of FeS.

Our wastewater is alkaline, and no sulfur-containing chemicals such as sulfuric acid are used in the treatment process; can hydrogen sulfide still be generated under such conditions?
Hydrogen sulfide is produced in anaerobic reactions, as sulfur is an essential element for methanogens; therefore, a sufficient concentration of sulfides is necessary to ensure the effectiveness of these anaerobic reactions; Hydrogen sulfide is produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria.
