I would like to ask fellow sailors: our air compressors (from Ingersoll Rand) have two cooling water lines connected to each of their three cylinders – one for inlet and one for outlet – in order to regulate the temperature of the cylinders. Previously, the inlet was used for temperature control, but now the outlet is used instead. I’m wondering if these two methods could have any impact on the compressors’ cylinders. For example, could it lead to scaling, reduced heat exchange efficiency, or an increased residence time of the cooling water within the tubes? In practice, the inlet control of circulating water has little to do with the outlet control, especially when the temperature rise is not high. In heat exchangers, the opening degree of the outlet valve for the circulating water is generally controlled to ensure that the water does not vaporize and that the heat exchanger is fully filled with water.
It is recommended to use an outlet valve for control. As for whether it will affect scaling, this mainly depends on the quality of your circulating water. Also, the circulating water retention time you mentioned can be explained as flow rate/flow control.
May I ask: why did you change it from inlet regulation to outlet regulation? Of course, the latter is a more reasonable approach. Adjusting the inlet flow easily leads to insufficient water volume, resulting in fluctuations in cylinder cooling and unstable temperatures; moreover, the water may vaporize, further reducing the flow rate. ...... Design concept: 1) Theoretical calculation settings: valve opening degree, flow velocity and volume, outlet temperature; 2) Measure the actual outlet temperature, 3) fine-tune the opening degree of the inlet valve to keep the outlet temperature within the design range. .
