As children grow older, they develop their own ideas and personalities; especially during puberty, their rebellious tendencies become more pronounced. This is a great challenge for these parents. For parents whose children have ADHD, caring for them seems even more difficult. So what should we do? Adolescence is a challenge for both parents and children. Every parent can recall their own experiences from back then, and is quite certain that those experiences were much more difficult than those of today’s children. As adults, we can now clearly realize how risky, impulsive, and even foolish it was of us to do things that we thought were right at the time. Now, as parents, we want our children to avoid encountering those risky and impulsive situations we experienced as much as possible. Unfortunately, despite our many attempts, history always repeats itself. As parents, our goal is to reduce the occurrence of some of the destructive things that children might experience during adolescence. Despite our efforts, in the end we had to accept the reality of the child acting on their own. In other words, we must do our utmost to protect children from the worst consequences of what they experience. How to take care of a child with ADHD? When caring for children with ADHD, parents face even more challenges. So how should we parents take care of our own children? Below, I will share a few tips that I hope will be helpful to you. 1. Deal with the matter at hand – Resolve what is happening currently. Raising previous questions again is of no benefit to anyone and serves no purpose. Don’t say to children, “I told you.” Provide education and guidance to the child only regarding the current matter. 2. Sympathize with the child’s current situation. Like everyone else, teenagers do not like to be blamed or criticized for their actions. Messiness and forgetfulness are not intentional behaviors of children with ADHD. It is best to help the child get through these difficult experiences together with the child and the teacher. Impulsivity is a basic characteristic of children with ADHD. 3. Stay calm Shouting will not achieve the result you want. It is best to have a rational reminder that constantly alerts the child to pay attention to their behavior. 4. Get involved in the difficulties your child faces. A competent parent never allows themselves or their child to fall into conflict. Parents should try their best to guide children with ADHD to face the difficulties they encounter, actively helping them solve problems or working together with them to address those issues in a calm manner.
