In design, does the pressure we refer to mean gauge pressure or absolute pressure? For example, for a boiler with a pressure of 0.5 MPa, does this refer to gauge pressure or absolute pressure?
It’s usually gauge pressure; check HG20570-1, which deals with design pressure and design temperature.
This post was last edited by ylb913 on 2015-7-5 at 17:38. What is shown is gauge pressure; there’s no need to doubt that. It’s not easy to find a pressure gauge that shows absolute pressure.

The pressure mentioned in the design refers to stress, that is, the pressure exerted per unit area. In chemical engineering design, unless otherwise specified, the term pressure generally refers to gauge pressure, that is, the pressure exerted by a medium on a component under standard atmospheric conditions; of course, ambient air is also considered a type of medium. Gauge pressure is generally not specified or marked in any particular way, but absolute pressure, vacuum level, etc., all have their own specific methods of notation and representation, or require special explanations.
I agree with what was said on the seventh floor. Additionally, as a supplementary point, in the design process, aside from calculating the physical properties of materials and the net positive suction head required for pumps, most of the values used are gauge pressures
