Question: What do the pipeline media PW, MS, and LUS mean? What standards specify this?
There is no standard uniform regulation for pipeline medium codes; they are determined internally by each engineering company or design institute. Some common terms are generally applicable, such as MS, which usually refers to medium pressure steam; the meaning is similar across different manufacturers. But it’s not easy to guess the codes for the process media, as they are all abbreviations of related English terms.
There’s no standard for this; each company uses different names for its own materials. As long as they are consistent, that’s fine. Our company refers to dimethyldichlorosilane as DMS (this is also how it is denoted on PID), while other companies call it DMDCS; it’s fine as long as everyone understands what it is. I don’t see anything wrong with it.
Reference can be made to the unified regulations on the content and level of detail in the construction drawings for chemical process design specified in HGT 20519-2009. Generally, it is the engineering company itself that establishes these regulations, but almost always in the form of corresponding English abbreviations.
Agreed; it’s all up to the design institute to use its own conventions or expressions such as alphabetical abbreviations. Generally, it is indicated in the image on the home page or in the design specifications. Furthermore, it was also included in the initial design specifications. In the case of piping, it is also mentioned in the pipeline material grade table
