I’ve been in this industry for half a year now, and I feel quite lost when it comes to learning. Usually, I just pick up whatever needs to be learned at the moment, and since the project keeps moving forward, I only find out what the next steps are when it’s time. I really want to learn in a more systematic way. Is there anyone who can provide guidance from a higher perspective and tell me if there’s still hope for me? . I work with field instruments, and I’d like to learn more about systems, but it seems like everyone is very protective of their jobs–which really bothers me. I don’t want to take anyone’s job; I just want to learn more. This also makes me unhappy

The instrumentation field is a highly comprehensive one; to excel in it, one must have knowledge of processes, electricity, pumps and machinery, as well as automation. Therefore, you can create a rough plan for yourself regarding what to study in the near future and so on. A person who is truly good at learning is terrifying; if you really want to learn, you must persevere, because this is a society full of impatience. I’m also in a chemical plant, and there are very few people in the whole plant who want to learn *; that’s the reality.
Since you are involved in the new project, there should at least be a Gantt chart showing the project schedule. It’s possible to determine whether each task can be completed on time during the project meetings; any issues that arise and how they will be resolved can be noted down in a notebook, which will give an overall idea of the project timeline. I’ve borrowed the design documents for the project, including the preliminary design and the detailed design for instrumentation and automation, so that I can take a look for myself. I want to understand how the process works, what the main equipment is, what the material flow looks like, and what the important parameters and control mechanisms are (and how they affect the process). I plan to study these on my own first to get an understanding. Take a look at the various types of instruments, understand their basic measurement principles, and find out how design firms consider parameters such as material, PN, and TN when selecting instruments. Download the selection guides and installation/maintenance manuals from the official websites of instrument manufacturers to learn what the different letters and numbers in the model numbers mean, as well as what the information displayed on the instrument’s nameplate and panel signifies. The instruments are installed with direct piping; some are designed to be installed as pressure tapping pipes. Think about why such a design is used. When considering a control system, one needs to take into account the brand and series chosen, the types of modules available, how the overall topology is structured, how sufficient IO capacity is ensured, what the software entails, and how the software is developed and maintained. If there is a UPS, you can take a look at how the designer approaches its selection. Also, get a general idea of the standards and specifications that serve as the basis for the design; it’s not necessary to know them in detail, but if you have time, you can take a look at those standards yourself. Working on a project allows one to learn a lot; one also needs to spend time in their spare time thinking about and processing this knowledge. I think it’s better to first master working on the field, and then learn about DCS and similar systems. At least I’m not good at that at all; I feel resistant to programs like DCS for some reason – I prefer working on the field. . .
