The packing seal of a reciprocating compressor is a dynamic seal; its sealing performance is only optimal when the compressor is in operation, as leakage is relatively high when it is at rest. In contrast, centrifugal compressors generally have labyrinth seals. I would like to know what the differences are between these two types of sealing mechanisms
In reciprocating compressors, the packing ring is compressed by the leaking gas, while in centrifugal compressors, the labyrinth seal is maintained through external sealing gas and backflow, thereby achieving a tip-to-tip seal
For these two types of seals, is the leakage rate higher when the equipment is at rest compared to when it is in operation?

The seals in reciprocating compressors mainly consist of flow control rings and sealing rings; if these fail, severe leakage can occur. However, even when the compressor is not in operation, leakage should not be severe. I have been working with compressors for 5 years now
