How to measure the steam seal gap during turbine installation
The radial clearance is adjusted using adhesive tape, while the axial clearance of the steam seal is measured with a feeler gauge.
The method of using adhesive tape is quite common; a feeler gauge can also be used
Use medical tape to measure the thickness; the number of layers applied should be slightly more than the gap required. Secure the air seal, rotate the rotor a few times, and check for any broken adhesive tape as well as any changes in color.
