Dear teachers, hello. I currently have a chemical engineering project that requires automated control systems. The drawings available are not complete – there are process flow diagrams and PFDs. Can these be used as the basis for designing an automated control system? Thank you! !

There are process flow diagrams as well as PFDs, which can be used as drawings for the construction of fully automated control systems
In chemical engineering projects, automation (instrumentation) is a specialized field, just like electrical engineering or architectural engineering in such projects; it certainly cannot be handled with just a few drawings. From the perspective of automation control, it generally includes design conditions (process, architecture, electrical systems, equipment, etc.) ; Automatic control equipment category: Instrument data sheets, DCS (or PLC) specification documents, DCS (or PLC) configuration diagrams ; System connection diagrams: circuit diagrams, grounding system diagrams, cable routing diagrams, and so on. Check the standards and specifications; they represent only the minimum level of detail.

These are merely the basis and foundation for designing the instrument specifications. It is recommended to consider implementing interlocks in the DCS/PLC; reviewing the interlock circuits and control schemes is important for DCS/PLC programming.
Based on the process flow diagram, operation instructions, selection parameters, and emergency response guidelines, automatic control can be achieved; however, the selection parameters need to be specified in detail so that the appropriate instruments can be chosen, thereby enabling automatic control of the entire production line.
