For those with some knowledge of chemistry, to put it professionally: Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is primarily used as an additive in gasoline. It helps to increase the octane rating of gasoline, improves its combustion efficiency, reduces the level of CO in vehicle exhausts, and also lowers the production costs of gasoline. It played a crucial role in the transition to lead-free gasoline, serving as a substitute for leaded gasoline. For those with little knowledge of the chemical industry, put simply: MTBE is an additive for gasoline; if you buy 93-octane gasoline and add a bottle of MTBE to it, it becomes 97-octane gasoline. I used to like following cars and smelling their exhaust fumes, but now that I’ve added this, there’s no smell anymore. Friendly reminder: Older leaded gasoline was highly harmful to the human body, as it contained a certain amount of tetraethyl lead added to prevent shaking and explosions; hence it was also known as ethyl gasoline. Now, with MTBE as a substitute for leaded gasoline, the amount of lead emitted in vehicle exhaust has been reduced. At present, the public has little understanding of the chemical industry, which leads to blind panic. Therefore, chemical companies need to explain things to the public in an honest and factual manner; once the public has a proper understanding, they will no longer feel panicked. In fact, with the increasing awareness of energy conservation and environmental protection among chemical companies, as well as the widespread adoption of clean production technologies, chemical phobia can be significantly reduced or even eliminated. Recently, the company has been committed to keeping its doors open, providing the public with a platform to observe and understand chemical enterprises up close, allowing the media and the general public to visit chemical industrial parks and see the true face of modern chemical enterprises. What is the difference between the petroleum-based MTBE process and the chemical-based MTBE process? The refinery-type MTBE process is primarily used to produce MTBE for gasoline blending, with low requirements regarding isobutylene conversion rate and product purity. The chemical-type MTBE process is aimed at producing high-purity 1-butene, or high-purity isobutylene; it requires a high conversion rate of isobutylene (so that no isobutylene remains in the residual material) as well as a high purity of the product (to facilitate the production of high-purity isobutylene through cracking)

The demand for MTBE in the United States is expected to decline from 12.9 million tons per year in 2001 to 3.44 million tons per year by 2010. Global MTBE demand reached a peak of 22.58 million tons per year in 2001, and it is predicted that demand will further decline in the future. If MTBE is no longer used, measures must be taken to compensate for the loss of its octane rating, quantity, and other properties.
You’re right about everything, but the ban on MTBE seems inevitable. About 10 years, I guess. As environmental pressures increase and due to the advice of certain experts, it’s only a matter of time before there are restrictions or bans imposed. However, the impact on the refining units is minimal; slight modifications are sufficient.
