Moving away from the petrochemical industry

The once-thriving coal-to-oil and petrochemical industry suddenly began to perform poorly; companies in this sector were not doing well, and work became less demanding. At the beginning of the year, there were layoffs and job reassignments; everyone who was supposed to leave did so. If things continue like this and it feels like a waste of time, then simply quit and keep myself busy to make my life more fulfilling. The industry I’m going to join is relatively busy and quite prominent. Looking back at my career: I started working at Sinopec right after graduating, and I stayed there for over a decade. When the company underwent restructuring, I left Sinopec and switched to work in the power sector. I worked there for 8 years. Later, the coal-to-oil project began to hire many people, and a project involving billions of investments was indeed very attractive; it seemed like there was a chance to build a career there. More than four years passed, and the project went into operation, though only on a trial basis. Subsequent projects did not keep up. . . . It’s like starting over in the petrochemical industry; before I was involved in oil refining, and now I’m back to coal-to-oil processing. This isn’t my main area of expertise – I only have a basic understanding of the production processes, and I roughly know how it works. Once again, leaving the petrochemical industry this time. . . Choosing a major can sometimes be important; don’t focus only on the main major, as in times of economic downturns it’s easier to change jobs with a minor. . . . . Although I’ll never be able to become a specialist in this field.
