Some of the reaction vessels in our factory are connected to cooling water, steam, and chilled water, and jacketing is used for heating or cooling them. Occasionally, workers make mistakes that result in cooling water entering the chilled water pipeline, or chilled water entering the cooling water pipeline. Is there any good solution for this?
If switching back and forth is required, it must be done by marking them appropriately; if they aren’t needed temporarily, blind plates can be installed!

Aren’t the two systems separate? If they are connected to the same pipeline, installing a check valve on each pipeline will solve the problem.
The error occurs mainly in this way: after cooling with cold water, when discharging the cold water, the workers open the chilled water outlet valve instead of the cold water outlet valve, which causes the cooling water to enter the chilled brine pipeline; similarly, chilled water enters the cooling water pipeline. There hasn’t been any good way to solve it; I hope experts can offer some guidance! Even though the pipeline markings on site are clearly marked, errors can still occur.

Relying on the workers’ awareness isn’t enough; for problems like this, machinery is necessary. Here’s an idea: use a temperature sensor, install valve controllers on the outlet pipes for both cooling water and chilled water, and set up a logical interlock system. The corresponding valve will open automatically based on the temperature – the cooling water valve opens when the temperature is above 35 degrees, while the chilled water valve opens when the temperature is below 10 degrees. This way, cross-connection will be prevented.
Is it feasible to add a flow meter at the outlet? Avoid leaving valves not properly closed or turning on the wrong valve
Use a DCS program for control; it adds some cost, but humans will always make mistakes. Or is it possible to use only chilled water through flow control?
