Gentlemen: Why is helium used instead of nitrogen for the leak testing of tower manufacturing equipment before it leaves the factory? Thank you!
Nitrogen can react with metals such as lithium or sodium in air to produce nitrides.
Once I get to the company, are there any rules regarding this pressure testing? Our company usually uses steam or nitrogen for such purposes
Helium is used because of its low molecular weight and safety, as well as its ability to better demonstrate the airtightness of the equipment. After the equipment arrives at the site, the main unit does not require it, but after installation, a uniform airtightness is needed throughout the system, and nitrogen is generally used for this purpose.
Helium is cheaper, right? . . . . .
Helium is much more expensive than nitrogen, especially in high-purity forms
Is it a gas-tightness test? Airtightness tests generally use air; using helium is too expensive – that would be a leakage test instead.

Based on the basic principle of helium leak detection, helium is used as a tracer gas; it is introduced into the workpiece inside the vacuum chamber, and then a helium leak detector enables high-precision, fast, and accurate determination of the workpiece’s leakage status.
Use helium for leak detection. . . . . . That’s easy to say; do you know how much a set of leak detectors costs? ? Do you know how much a bottle of helium costs?
